چکیده

We present a model that considers the maturation of the antibody population following primary antigen presentation as a global optimization problem [TT99]. The trade-off that emerges from our model describes the balance between the safety of mutations that lead to local improvements in affinity and the necessity of the system to undergo global reconfigurations in the antibody’s shape in order to achieve its goals, in this example of fast-paced evolution. The parameter p which quantifies this trade-off appears to be itself both robust and evolvable. This parallels the rapidity and consistency of the optimization operating during the biologic response. In this paper, we explore the robust qualities and evolvability of this tunable control parameter, p.

Adaptation to Parasites and Costs of Parasite Resistance in Mutator and Nonmutator Bacteria.

Parasitism creates selection for resistance mechanisms in host populations and is hypothesized to promote increased host evolvability. However, the influence of these traits on host evolution when parasites are no longer present is unclear. We used experimental evolution and whole-genome sequencing of Escherichia coli to determine the effects of past and present exposure to parasitic viruses (p...

Predicting virus evolution: the relationship between genetic robustness and evolvability of thermotolerance.

Evolutionary biologists often seek to infer historical patterns of relatedness among organisms using phylogenetic methods and to gauge the evolutionary processes that determine variation among individuals in extant populations. But relatively less effort is devoted to making evolutionary biology a truly predictive science, where future evolutionary events are precisely foreseen. Accurate predic...

Construction of the Recombinant Plasmid Expressing AID under the Control of Temperature-sensitive Promoter of Bacteriophage Lambda

Background and purpose: Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) is a B-cell specific enzyme responsible for somatic hypermutation (SHM) and class switch recombination (CSR) of antibody genes within the B-cell follicle of peripheral lymphoid organs. Ectopic overexpression of the enzyme leads to mutations in non-B cells and Escherichia coli (E.coli) genes. However, induction of mutations in E...

Degenerate Neutrality Creates Evolvable Fitness Landscapes

Understanding how systems can be designed to be evolvable is fundamental to research in optimization, evolution, and complex systems science. Many researchers have thus recognized the importance of evolvability, i.e. the ability to find new variants of higher fitness, in the fields of biological evolution and evolutionary computation. Recent studies by Ciliberti et al (Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci., 20...

Revisiting Robustness and Evolvability: Evolution in Weighted Genotype Spaces

Robustness and evolvability are highly intertwined properties of biological systems. The relationship between these properties determines how biological systems are able to withstand mutations and show variation in response to them. Computational studies have explored the relationship between these two properties using neutral networks of RNA sequences (genotype) and their secondary structures ...
